Reality Contest Shows
I try to avoid contest shows because someone has to lose. It's a contest—I understand that--but everyone seems to have a poignant story as to why they're there and what this competition means to them. So, it pulls on my heartstrings when someone has to go home.
Despite my best efforts to keep away from these shows, I can't seem to pass up a good baking challenge. I'm currently watching a holiday baking challenge from last year every day except Tuesday (more on that in a minute) while on the elliptical. I find myself talking to the TV/contestants.
“Oh, no! You're running out of time!”
“Awww, s/he tried so hard. Bless it.”
And if someone cries… 🥺
Yet, the remaining contestants will cry for the person being sent home and then cheer as soon as they're out of the room because they made it to the next round. I guess you compartmentalize. 🤷♀️
The other contest I've watched two years in a row is Finding Mr. Christmas. And that's the show I watch on Tuesday.
Is it cheesy? Yes!
Do I roll my eyes almost the entire time it's on? Also, yes!
But I also find myself laughing or saying “Aw” quite a bit.
The show gives one man a chance at winning the Mr. Christmas title and appearing as a lead in a Hallmark Christmas movie.
Last year's winner, Ezra Moreland, appeared in the Hallmark movie, Happy Howlidays. I watched the movie because I felt invested. Although he made a cameo in this year's Christmas on Duty, as far as I can tell, he hasn't been tapped to play another leading role. So, that's a bummer.
For the record, I'm not someone who watches dozens of Hallmark Christmas movies every year. I'll watch one or two, maybe three if it comes highly recommended. For example, I watched A Newport Christmas last week, and I enjoyed it. It's a time travel, and it's really sweet.
How did I get sucked into watching Finding Mr. Christmas when I'm not a super fan of the movies? Well, it doesn't hurt that everybody on the show is “yummy,” as Leanne Morgan would say. And I get wrapped up in the contestants’ stories and the competition itself—I have to know who wins! But when someone has to take down his stocking from the mantel and go home, I hurry over to Instagram to make sure he's all right and still has a job he enjoys. 😁
What about you? Are you a fan of contest shows?
Happy reading (and watching)!
Gayle
